Fellowships for math graduate students at KU

In addition to Teaching Assistantships offered by the Department of Mathematics, there are other forms of support for our graduate students.

Fellowships for incoming and first year students

Fellowships for incoming students are awarded based on the merits of the applicants. Several fellowships and supplements of different amounts are offered by the

In addition, outstanding students with interests in areas of applied mathematics can be nominated for the very attractive

which is a four-year award consisting of a $24,000 annual payment, full tuition and fees, and a development program.

The department Graduate Committee makes the nominations for all these fellowships to the corresponding university units, which then select the winners of the campus-wide competition. These awards are highly selective and the students nominated for them must have very high GPA and GRE scores. To receive full consideration for these fellowships the prospective students must have their complete list of application materials received by us by very early January.

Occasionally some of the above fellowships are awarded to first year students too.

Fellowships for more advanced students

  • We have a large number of summer fellowships, usually given to our most advanced graduate students in residence during the summer months.
  • A small number of Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) is available during the academic year, generally to students already working on their dissertations.
  • Both the Graduate School and the Department of Mathematics provide different forms of financial support for graduate students to attend conferences and professional meetings related to their fields of study.
