Undergraduate Scholarships: Scholarship Funds
The following scholarship funds have been established by friends and alumni of the University of Kansas. In each case, a scholarship is awarded on merit and its stipend is determined by need.
THE CHARLES H. ASHTON SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship fund was established in 1947 in memory of Professor Ashton by a gift from his family and friends. The fund was increased in 1970 by a gift from members of Professor Ashton's family. Professor Ashton was a member of the Department of Mathematics from 1903 to 1936 and was the Chairman from 1918 to 1931.
THE FLORENCE BLACK SCHOLARSHIP
The Florence Black Scholarship was established in 1974 by friends and colleagues of Professor Black. Professor Black earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics at the University of Kansas and was a member of the faculty from 1918 until her retirement in 1960.
THE WEALTHY BABCOCK SCHOLARSHIP
The Wealthy Babcock Scholarship was established in 1980 by Martha Peterson. Professor Babcock earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics at the University of Kansas and was a member of the faculty from 1926 until her retirement in 1966. Martha Peterson is a prominent educator who received all her degrees from KU: B.A. 1937, M.A. in Mathematics 1943, Ph.D. in Education 1959. She was president of both Barnard and Beloit colleges, retiring from the latter in 1981.
THE BLACK-BABCOCK SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship fund was established in 1990 by a bequest from Professors Florence Black and Wealthy Babcock.
THE PAUL F. CONRAD GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
This award was established in 2008 in memory of Professor Conrad by gifts from his family and friends to provide awards for deserving graduate students in mathematics. In 1981, Professor Conrad was named the first Henry J. Bischoff Professor of Mathematics at KU. He retired in 1992.
THE CHARLES HOBBS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship fund was established in 1954 in memory of Charles Hobbs by a gift from his sister, Helen Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs was a graduate of the University of Kansas and a former Commissioner of Insurance for the State of Kansas.
THE JOAN KIRKHAM SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS
This scholarship was established in 2002 by a gift from Joan Kirkham to provide scholarships for deserving female students in the Department of Mathematics. Joan Kirkham received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from KU in 1948.
THE EDITH S. KORNBLEET MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1995 in memory of Edith S. Kornbleet by a gift from her family. Mrs. Kornbleet graduated from KU in 1923. She taught mathematics for many years for Argentine High School and for the Kansas City, Kansas School District.
THE MAY LANDIS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1958 in memory of May Landis by a bequest from her brother, Paul Landis. The fund to support these scholarships was greatly increased in 1963 by a bequest from her sister, Maude Landis. May Landis was a high school mathematics teacher in Leavenworth and in Kansas City.
THE U.G. MITCHELL SCHOLARSHIP
The first U. G. Mitchell Scholarship was established by the Department of Mathematics upon the retirement of Professor U. G. Mitchell as its chairman. Professor Mitchell was on the faculty of the Department from 1906 to 1942. Professor Mitchell was Chairman from 1931 to 1941. These scholarships are continued by a bequest from his wife.
THE MINNIE MCDANIEL & LESLIE B. ROBERTSON MATHEMATICS FUND
This fund was established in 1995 by a gift from the Robertsons. Mrs. Robertson received B.A. (1934) and M.A. (1937) degrees in mathematics from KU and taught in the Department from 1941 to 1948. Mr. Robertson received a B.S. degree from Southwest State in Springfield, MO, and an M.S.Ed (1942) from KU. He was Supervisor of Communication Subjects in KU's Oread Training School from 1940-48. In 1948 the Robertsons moved to Medford, OR, where Mr. Robertson became head of business education for Medford High School. He subsequently established the Medford School of Business.
THE TAYLOR ENDOWMENT FUND FOR MATHEMATICS
This fund for the benefit of students and faculty in mathematics was established in 1996 by the Taylor family in memory of Bert A. and Florence A. Taylor whose three sons were all KU mathematics majors (B.A. Taylor, B.A., 1961; Rodger D. Taylor, B.A., 1969; and Robert D. Taylor, B.A., 1969).
THE ROLLIN STERLING WADE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1964 in memory of Rollin Sterling Wade by a gift from his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Wade are graduates of the University of Kansas and their son was a student at the University of Kansas. This is awarded each year to the entering freshman who has made the highest score on the Annual Mathematical Association of America High School Mathematics Contest in Kansas.
THE ELBERT WALKER SCHOLARSHIP
This fund was established in 2002 by a gift from Elbert and Carol Walker in honor of G. Baley Price. Elbert Walker received his Ph.D. in mathematics from KU in 1955.
THE ALBERT F. AND BARBARA KILE ZERNICKOW MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP
This fund was established in 1985 by Barbara Kile Zernickow (now Barbara Kile Wheat) (BA 1945, MEd 1949) to provide scholarships for deserving students in mathematics. The fund is named after her husband Albert (BS 1949 Engineering) and herself.
