In this talk I will briefly introduce the concept of cohomological varieties for finite groups and Lie algebras and the support varieties for their modules. Then I will talk about a few applications of these varieties and the ways of computing them. Finally, I will discuss the relations among them for reductive Lie algebras and finite groups of Lie types.
