Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird For SSL

  1. Launch Thunderbird and choose Tools -> Account Settings.

  2. In the left hand navigation list, expand the name of the mail account that you want to configure and highlight Server Settings.

    Note: If you are configuring this on a Math Department computer, make sure the Use secure authentication box is checked.

  3. Under Security Settings, choose the SSL button.

  4. In the upper portion, if your are using IMAP, ensure that port 993 is being used.

  5. If you are using POP, then ensure that the port 995 is being used.

  6. You are now finished configuring your incoming mail for SSL. Next, you need to configure your outgoing mail for SSL. Highlight Outgoing Server.

  7. From there, highlight the account you would like to edit and click on the edit button.

  8. Ensure that you are using port 465, and the the SSL button is selected. Also make sure that the Use name and password is checked, and your user name is your Math Department user name. Click OK. This completes the configuration of your mail client to use SSL encryption.
