Network and Print Access for Personally-Owned Computers

Overview
Many times a faculty, staff, or guest will come to the Mathematics Department with his/her own laptop, and wants to connect to our network for internet and print access. Network access is fairly easy to accommodate; however faculty, staff, and guests should be aware that the Mathematics departmental policy is to immediately and permanently ban any personally-owned computer that is adversely affecting other computers in the department. Printing access is much harder to accommodate if the platform is not based on Mac OS X. We provide this information as a convenience, but we will not provide support for machines not owned by the Mathematics Department at the University of Kansas, whether it be graduate students, faculty, or visitors. For the Mathematics departmental policy relating to supported and unsupported equipment, please click here.
Network Access
Network access is the easiest to accommodate for all platforms. The Network Manager will need the hardware address of your ethernet or wireless device in order for you to connect to the network. If you want both ethernet and wireless access, you will need to provide the hardware address of both devices. For guests, we also need to know the dates you will be visiting our department, and a professor we can contact to vouch for your existence and presence in this department. It is usually most convenient for you to email us the hardware address before arriving to the campus, so you don't have to waste time tracking down someone who can accommodate your request.

Printing Access
Printing access varies by platform. For computers running MacOS X, it will immediately and automagically work. For computers running Microsoft Windows, significant modification to your computer must be performed. For computers running Linux, this will depend on the distribution of Linux you run.
Mac OS X
This just works without any extra configuration.
Windows NT / 2000 / XP
For versions of windows greater than NT Service Pack 3, you must modify a registry key to be able to browse the Windows network. Any attempt to browse the MATH workgroup without the registry key modification will result in the error "The Account Is Not Authorized to Login From This Station".
WARNING - the information below modifies the Windows registry. If you use the Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. This information is provided as a convenience. Following this information is strictly at your own risk!
From the Start button, select Run, then type "regedt32". Then browse to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters
entry. You will need to add/modify the following entry:
- Value Name: EnablePlainTextPassword
- Data Type: REG_DWORD
- Data: 1
After a reboot, you should be able to browse to the \\MATHSERVER computer, and add any one of the printers on that server. A variety of printers are available, but not all are in public access. Specifically, q405 is at the main Mathematics Office, q318 is in room 318 (but requires a key), q626 is in room 626 (but requires a key), and q651 is in room 651 (but also requires a key). The other printers listed are in faculty and staff offices.
