A. Checking e-mail inside the Mathematics Deparment
1. For Mac Users: Apple Mail
If you are using a Mac from within the department, the Apple Mail client is already set up for you. Just click on the postage stamp icon in the dock to start mail.
2. For Linux Users: Mozilla Thunderbird
If you are using a Linux workstation in the department, Mozilla Thunderbird is the preferred way of reading e-mail, and like Apple Mail, it is also already set up for you. To start thunderbird, click on the thunderbird icon in the panel.
3. For Linux Users: Pine
If you are using a Linux workstation in the department, you can also use the program "Pine" to read your mail. Simply open a terminal and type the command 'pine'. Note: If it has been over 10 hours since you have last logged in, you will be prompted to enter your password. You will be able to use pine for 10 hours starting the time you last entered your password. Before running pine, you will see something similiar to the following:
[user@pascal user]$ pine
You will be able to use pine until 01/12/05 14:36:09.
Use the command 'kinit' to force obtaining a new authentication ticket if
this isn't enough time for you. Tickets can last a maximum of 10 hours.
Launching pine...
This will give you an indication of how long pine will work. You can run the 'kinit' command to force obtaining a new authentication ticket so you can use pine for up to 10 hours. If your authentication ticket has expired, you will see something similiar to the following, and you will need to enter your password to renew your authentication token.
[user@pascal user]$ pine
Your authentication ticket has expired.

B. Checking e-mail from home or other locations
1. Webmail
You can now check your e-mail from a web browser. Visit https://www.math.ku.edu/mail to login and read your e-mail.
2. Pine
You can use the program "Pine" to read your mail remotely. (See above for information on pine).
First you will need to use ssh to connect to pascal.math.ku.edu. For information on how to do this, see Using SSH. After you have a terminal open, you need to run the command pine.
3. IMAP
You can also use other programs to access your E-mail account, using the protocol IMAP. Programs that use IMAP include Netscape Messenger, Mozilla Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, newer versions of Eudora, Outlook and many others.
To set up your mail program, use mail.math.ku.edu as your IMAP (or incoming) mail server as well as your SMTP (or outbound) mail server. You will need to use SMTP authentication if you are outside of the department. This means that you must provide your username and password for sending mail (through SMTP) or you will get an error similar to "Relay access denied."
C. Forwarding your mail
To forward your mail, you need to log into the Account Settings interface at https://www.math.ku.edu/account.
D. Setting Spam Preferences
To edit your spam preferences, including your spam level, whitelisted addresses and blacklisted addresses, you need to log into the Account Settings interface at https://www.math.ku.edu/account.
