The Department is a math friendly academic environment that provides programs designed to enrich the mathematical knowledge of students at all levels, from freshmen to doctoral students.
The Department has 37 tenured and tenure-track faculty whose original research is frequently presented in one of the many weekly seminars or colloquia in theoretical or applied mathematics. The faculty is also strongly committed to undergraduate and graduate education. This is evidenced by the many faculty members who have earned campus-wide teaching awards.
For undergraduate students, the Department offers a variety of courses ranging from introductory precalculus to senior level courses in pure and applied mathematics. Our mathematics majors form a talented group of students who have the flexibility to choose a number of tracks in which to complete a major. A consequence of this flexibility is that our graduating mathematics majors find employment across fields. Recent graduates have attained positions as actuaries, video game programmers, college teachers, or gone on to graduate school. The Department sponsors an active Math Club and a student chapter of the Association of Women in Mathematics.
More than 80 students in our graduate program in mathematics are pursing a Masters of Arts degree or a Doctor of Philosophy degree. About 90% of our graduate students are supported by research grants, teaching assistantships, or fellowships. Our graduate students have offices in Snow Hall, alongside the mathematics faculty. Many have offices in recently remodeled rooms. Our students receive graduate degrees specializing in the areas of algebra, analysis, topology, numerical analysis, dynamical systems, applied probability, stochastic analysis, or statistics. Our recent graduates have obtained positions in industry, academic universities, and government agencies.
