Stewart. Brooks/Cole, 2006
Calculator:A graphing calculator is required for this course. A
TI-83/83Plus/84plus calculator is recommended.You are allowed to use
such a calculator on midterm and final exams, but not on the Gateway
exams.

Grading Breakdown: This class is graded
out of 1000 points. The breakdown is as follows:
Midterm Exam: 200 points
Final Exam: 300 points
Gateway: 100 points
In-Class Exams: 200 points
Homework and Quizzes: 200 points
Grading Scale: It is expected that
grades will be awarded on a percentage basis with 90% and above an A;
80% - 89% a B; 70% - 79% a C; 60% - 69% a D, 0% - 59% an F.
Common Exams: Your enrollment in this
course commits you to taking the common exams at the scheduled times.
Almost no excuses will be accepted for missing a common exam. For

Gateway: The Gateway Exam is a test of
skills that are important to this math class. Each stage consists of
10 questions, and you must get at least 8 right to pass. There are
two parts, the Online Gateway, which is worth 10 points, and the
In-Lab Gateway, which is worth 90 points. You must pass the Online
Gateway to be eligible to take the In-Lab Gateway. The list of
problems, deadlines, and other important information are located on

Homework: Homework will be assigned
periodically and collected. Assignments will be posted on the
homework page: http://www.math.ku.edu/~fbrondi/.
Homework
is due at the beginning of class, and no late assignments will be
accepted.
Attendance: You are expected to be in
class every day. You are responsible for all material covered and
any announcements made in class, whether you are present or not.
Quizzes: Short quizzes may be given
throughout the semester.
Exams: Two in-class exams will be given
during the semester. If you have a valid reason for missing an
in-class exam, you should discuss alternate arrangements with me
before the exam. If you miss an exam due to an emergency, contact me
as soon as possible.
Grade Dispute: Graded exams are
returned during class to the student. If a student wishes to discuss
the exam grade, it must be done within two weeks following the date
of the exam. Under some circumstances you may be asked to explain
your complaint in writing.

2008: Course Canceled - The course will not appear on the student's
official record.
September 12, 2008 - November 17, 2008:
Graded WP/WF - The grade (WP or WF) will appear on the student's
academic record but will not be included in the GPA.
After November 17, 2008: Courses cannot
be dropped.
September 17 (at 5pm) last day for proctored (in-Lab) Gateway Exam.
October 14 Midterm Exam.
October 16-17 Fall Break.
November 26-28, Thanksgiving Break.
December 12, Stop Day.
December 18, Final Exam.
Computer and Email Access: All students
will need internet access to get to the assignments and read course
announcements. KU will provide you with an account and there are
labs on campus with computers available. Class related materials
will be updated regularly. You also need to have an email address
registered with the University so that you can receive course
information. At the very least, you will be receiving important
reminders and updates about the Gateway Exam at your registered email
address. Register an email address or check to see that your
registered one is one that you check regularly by visiting

Academic Misconduct: According to
University Senate Rules and Regulations, Section 6, Academic
Misconduct is :
"2.6.1 Academic misconduct by a
student shall include, but not be limited to, disruption of classes;
threatening an instructor or fellow student in an academic setting;
giving or receiving of unauthorized aid on examinations or in the
preparation of notebooks, themes, reports or other assignments;
knowingly misrepresenting the source of any academic work;
unauthorized changing of grades; unauthorized use of University
approvals or forging of signatures; falsification of research
results; plagiarizing of another's work; violation of regulations or
ethical codes for the treatment of human and animal subjects; or
otherwise acting dishonestly in research."
Homework assignments, working in
groups, tutors: Students may discuss the homework problems in groups,
but each student is responsible for doing his/her own work and in
turning in his/her individual solutions. When a student works with a
tutor, it is the responsibility of both the student and the tutor to
ensure that it is the student who works to arrive at the solutions of
the problems. Tutors should not do students' homework for them or
provide them the solutions for their instructors' assignments.
Intellectual Property: Course materials
prepared by the instructor, together with the content of all lectures
and review sessions presented by the instructor are the property of
the instructor. Video and audio recording of lectures and review
sessions without the consent of the instructor is prohibited.
Permission to make such recordings may be granted by the instructor
on a case by case basis, on the condition that these recordings are
used only as a study aid by the individual making the recording.
Unless explicit permission is obtained from the instructor,
recordings of lectures and review sessions may not be modified and
must not be transfered or transmitted to any other person, whether or
not that individual is enrolled in the course.
