Pictures
Here are some pictures of me, friends and family.
My hobbies
In my spare time I love to play tennis, table tennis or soccer. If it is raining, I will likely read some books.
My favorite topics are history, politics, society, science fictions and humour. I also enjoy cooking if I have time and space.
Since coming to Michigan I have become a bridge player (again, it was Mel's fault) and used to play 3 times a week
in the Department's informal lunch bridge. Oh, I also like watching movies. Here is a list of movies that left a
lasting impression on me, for some reasons:
- "Indiana Jones" (all 3 of them).
- "Forrest Gump".
- "Lost and Delirious" .
- "The Piano Teacher".
- "Dirty Pretty Things" and "Amelie" : Audray Tautou is in them !
- "Schindler's List"
- "Minority Report" : I like the idea.
- "Saving Private Ryan"
- "The Terminal" : this is an underrated movie. Tom Hanks was again excellent.
- "Dogville" : a powerful movie about how the collective dark side of a society comes out. And
it has Nicole Kidman !
- "Love Actually"
- "The Human Stain"
- "House of Sand and Fog"
- "The King"
My Co-op
During grad school, I lived in the Gregory house, a lovely co-op.
My life has been much richer since I started living there. I especially enjoy the lively conversations with my
housemates about random things in life. Also, it has been interesting and sometimes hilarious to watch American
democracy at this grassroot level !
Links
Here are some websites that I frequent or found useful:
- Math: The amazing site for Commutative Algebra. You can find a lot of
lecture notes here .
- News and politics: CNN ,NY Times ,
Time (note they have Time Asia ), Slate .
- Soccer: the Guardian has an excellent soccer
site. Their daily recap, the "Fiver" is hilarious !.
- Tennis: CNN used to have a good site, but now it was included in their exotic sport
section ! The mailbag
still gives you an entertaing take on the week, though.
- Humour: If you missed today's Daily Show with John Stewart, go
here for the clips. This is not bad either. The Onion is OK, too. I can not find any website with a reliable source of good clean jokes.
If you have one, please let me know.
- History: the one at BBC is pretty comprehensive. This guy
Damen in Utah wrote
amizing lecture notes for his class, very entertaining read for Classical history (click on the class, and then on
Chapters, sometimes when he is teaching some of the links will be disabled).Or you can
go here .
- Popular Science: Again, the guardian website is good. For drier, but more news
,go here . Nova has some pretty good
resouces and free videos.
- Talking about PBS, is good for current issues.
You can enjoy the documentaries , too.
- The Freakonomics site.
