Text: The Language of First Order Logic, Jon Barwise & John Etchemendy, CSLI Lecture Notes, 1993. This book comes with the program Tarski's World, upon which much of the homework will be based.
Prerequisite: EECS 310, or MATH 450, or MATH 588, or MATH 590.
Three hours credit
Topics:
Propositional Logic: the alphabet, satisfiability and logical truth, methods of proof, formal proofs.
Quantifiers: syntax, semantics, methods of proof, mixed quantifiers, paraphrasing English.
Applications: Set theory and induction.
Advanced topics: Horn sentences, resolution, Skolemization and unification.
Probably there will be extra time in the second half of the semester to add topics not covered in the text.
Test Dates:
Midterm Thursday March 11, 11:00 am-12:20 pm
Final Exam Wednesday May 19, 11:30 am-2:30 pm
Homework: Homework will be handed in nearly every week, due on Tuesday. While much of the homework will be based on the program Tarski's World, I will not ask you to hand in discs or send files by e-mail.
Evaluation: Grades will be based on: 25% for the homework, 25 % for the midterm, and 50 % for the final.
Class meeting: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 am-12:20 pm in 4076 Wescoe.
