My research is in combinatorics, algebraic geometry, discrete geometry, and computational commutative algebra. I especially like topics in which these fields intersect, including configuration varieties (such as picture spaces of graphs, and Grassmannian, flag, and Schubert varieties), simplicial complexes, hyperplane arrangements, Stanley-Reisner theory, matroids, and Gröbner bases. I am always happy when combinatorial techniques can be used to solve problems from other areas of pure or applied mathematics.
NEW! If you are not a professional mathematician, but you are wondering just what all that is about, here is a more detailed description of my research publications, explained in plain English (still under construction).
